This magnificent nature reserve stretches for seven kilometres along the banks of the Almendares River, from the Puentes Grandes area to the mouth of the tributary at the Caribbean Sea. The park was officially inaugurated on 29 September 1989 by Fidel Castro, establishing itself as an ambitious urban, social and ecological project of environmental recovery. It is strategically located in the transition zone between the historic centre of El Vedado and the elegant residential suburbs of Miramar, making it the most accessible natural refuge for Havana's inhabitants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>An exemplary ecological restoration project<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The creation of the Metropolitan Park arose in response to an urgent need for the environmental recovery of the Almendares River and its surrounding environment, which had been deteriorating during the 1980s. This ambitious project brought together biologists, chemists, hydraulic engineers and environmentalists to develop comprehensive restoration strategies, establishing a pioneering model of urban conservation in the Latin American context. The original idea of creating a large park on the banks of the Almendares River was first proposed in 1912 by the publicist Carlos de Velasco, although its definitive materialisation came decades later through the revolutionary intervention. The project incorporated advanced techniques for the rehabilitation of river ecosystems and reforestation with native Cuban species, creating ecological corridors connecting different natural habitats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A recreational complex with multiple natural attractions<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The more than 700 hectares of the Gran Parque are distributed between the Botanical Garden, the Almendares Park, the Tropical Gardens and La Pola, offering an extraordinary diversity of recreational and educational spaces for visitors of all ages. The Almendares Park, built in 1959, includes cafeterias, a children's playground, a golf course and a small pier, providing ideal family facilities for outdoor recreation and relaxation.
